FIRST BORN GIRLS by Bernice McFadden is an intimate and powerful memoir exploring inherited trauma, family secrets, and the enduring bonds of love between mothers and daughters.
Margo and Terryl welcomed attendees to the annual McFadden Family Reunion in Barbados. Each first born girl was presented with a rose to designate them as the honorees for the day. Musical hits from the 70’s played as family members arrived. Guests played Sudoko as numbers were mentioned throughout Bernice’s story, playing an integral part of the family history. In a tribute to the ancestors, family was invited to share their Angelcestor story and tell how the influence of an ancestor impacted them. The family enjoyed a meal catered by their favorite Bajan girl, Selma, feasting on Cou Cou, Salt Fish Gravy, Cucumber Salad, Plantains, Macaroni Pie, Smothered Cabbage, Rice and Peas, Green Salad, and Black Cake. The taste of flavored Juice (Hibiscus & Cucumber Lime) added to the authenticity of the event. The brown stewed chicken was made by Tony from The Guinep Tree restaurant. Each guests departed with the famous Barbados Shirley cookies, in an assorted flavor, a shot of Gibbs Hill Black Rum from Barbados, a template to complete their family tree, and information from Ancestry.com to help them discover more about their family history.
