Poetry for Young People by Langston Hughes

Rhythm of the Word Poetry Slam

Tabahani Book Circle’s goal is to introduce culturally relevant books into under-resourced ethnic minority communities. We aim to impact literacy rates and inspire young people to develop a long-life love of learning through the written word.

On Saturday, April 15, 2023, we introduced to some and presented to others the book Poetry for Young Readers, by Langston Hughes. Now wouldn’t you know it, April is National Poetry Month, how fitting!  The students learned who Langston was and why he wrote the poetry he did. They listened to him read his poem The Weary Blues to the sound of live music.  They students were able to select one of Langston’s poems and read it aloud.  They were taught how to write a poem under the instruction of our guest Chelae Cummings from The Blu Pen.

Tabahani Book Circle members then transformed our classroom into a “cool” spot for our Poetry Slam. The students had the opportunity to present their written poems at the Rhythm of the Word Poetry Slam.
